August 2017

I almost titled this blog disappointed. It wouldn’t have been completely accurate. I am disappointed with the number of paintings I completed this month and the number of drawings and portraits I worked on, but it was such a good month filled with family and friends that I couldn’t possibly be disappointed with August!

September and October will be even busier with even bigger celebrations! My take away (again, I’ve thought this once or twice before) is that I have to get comfortable drawing and painting in front of other people. Easy to say, so so so hard to do.

A few of my favorite sketches from August.

Farmington River Plein Air

It has been beautiful here this week and I finally got outside to paint. I have very little experience as a plain air artist. I find it very intimidating. However, I would love to be a confident artist, the kind who goes on a walk and comes back with three paintings, several studies and hundreds of photos. So…I got out there to give it a try.

I enjoyed being outside, met a kayaker and several very friendly dogs. I learned you have to have a dark dark, kinda dark just won’t do. I also learned not to forget hand wipes! The painting leaves much to be desired, but the experience was positive. I will still have to talk myself into it, but I will go again.

When I got home I painted the scene from memory (almost completely) and reference photos I took while onsite. I am in love with this painting!

Allegheny River #5

I honestly have no idea how many paintings I have done of the Allegheny river, but it is time to start numbering them!

The photo reference for this painting was a sunny September day later in the afternoon looking NW.

Autumn View

I am not trying to rush the fall, I am still enjoying the heat of summer. I just love this view.

July Tracking

The last day of the month seems like a good day to hold myself accountable for tracking any progress on portraits and figures.
I did not get as many done as I wanted, and I don’t see any progress. My faces are still very flat and don’t look the person I am drawing, but what did I really expect with 5 drawings.

My goal is 31 faces in August!

The only way to improve is to produce… and track any progress.

So here we are, still struggling with portraits, tracking has officially begun!
