Love the Process update

I began a Love the Process challenge 13 days ago. It is a challenge to create art everyday, but love creating, not the product. It has been an incredibly fun and freeing challenge so far. It is my goal to make sure that continues, and hopefully my skills will improve along the way too!

Here are some of the pieces I have created.

I am posting my artwork everyday at https://www.instagram.com/stacymayou/

Love the Process

So, I started a 31 day daily painting challenge on October 1, then our youngest son got married on October 7, then I took a pastel workshop October 12-14, then I took a breath.

When all the merriment of the wedding was over but before all the information from the workshop sunk in I tried to paint, but it felt hard and heavy. I stood in front of my easel seeing the finished piece in my mind but afraid to paint because I knew I couldn’t produce what I saw in my head.

Thanks to the patience of a dear friend, the wisdom of my best friend, and the spunk of a new friend I realized that I’ve been so focused on producing a masterpiece that I’ve forgotten to how much I love the process.

Time to start the day with a cup of coffee and some doodles, color play, and material experimentation. I will be posting my Love the Process images daily on instagram, http://www.instagram.com/stacymayou

August 2017

I almost titled this blog disappointed. It wouldn’t have been completely accurate. I am disappointed with the number of paintings I completed this month and the number of drawings and portraits I worked on, but it was such a good month filled with family and friends that I couldn’t possibly be disappointed with August!

September and October will be even busier with even bigger celebrations! My take away (again, I’ve thought this once or twice before) is that I have to get comfortable drawing and painting in front of other people. Easy to say, so so so hard to do.

A few of my favorite sketches from August.

Farmington River Plein Air

It has been beautiful here this week and I finally got outside to paint. I have very little experience as a plain air artist. I find it very intimidating. However, I would love to be a confident artist, the kind who goes on a walk and comes back with three paintings, several studies and hundreds of photos. So…I got out there to give it a try.

I enjoyed being outside, met a kayaker and several very friendly dogs. I learned you have to have a dark dark, kinda dark just won’t do. I also learned not to forget hand wipes! The painting leaves much to be desired, but the experience was positive. I will still have to talk myself into it, but I will go again.

When I got home I painted the scene from memory (almost completely) and reference photos I took while onsite. I am in love with this painting!

Allegheny River #5

I honestly have no idea how many paintings I have done of the Allegheny river, but it is time to start numbering them!

The photo reference for this painting was a sunny September day later in the afternoon looking NW.

Autumn View

I am not trying to rush the fall, I am still enjoying the heat of summer. I just love this view.
